Many people have always understood that religious rite to be a specially claimed rite of the Catholic Church. AS AN ORDAINED ULC MINISTER, I notify you now that you have the FORMAL authorization by the Universal Life Church to forgive the sins of others -- as well as your own as a religious rite. Some ULC ministers hold that only Jesus can forgive sins. The ULC does not dispute any beliefs. Absolution is a religious practice of some denominations and the ULC formally acknowledges that clergy in the ULC have the authorization of the corporate Board of Directors of the ULC to act. NO ULC MINISTER, is required perform this religious rite. Nothing is ever imposed upon anyone in the ULC. This practice had not been addressed in ULC literature previously and was raised by the membership. It is announ! ! ced here, by the church and its Board of Directors. We will soon issue Certificates of Absolution for those who wish to use them.

Only website ordinations that have complete names and addresses are processed and legalized. Silly submissions are not recorded into the church's database. The credential is not the legalizing aspect of the ordination.

A credential and a confirmation message is provided to all that ask online. When the ordination application information is received by the church it is read by at least three ministers and then entered into the church's database. Recording the names and addresses into the church's International Ministerial Database is the actual legalizing process, NOT THE CREDENTIAL, confirmation message or any credentials.

False or fraudulent submissions are not legalized. The confirmation messages sent to those fraudulent names are automatic through the website programming, however we DO NOT RECORD THOSE ORDINATIONS into the church's database. The credentials and confirmation messages for those submissions have no legal weight. This statement has been repeated intentionally throughout this message.

The Universal Life Church acts upon FAITH and issues both a credential and confirmation message immediately to individuals that complete the online application. Yes, we understand there are some individuals that misues the liberal and accepting policy of the church. There are individuals that enter false and fraudulent information into the application and the program issues a credential and also a confirmation message in "response to the request". Those credentials and confirmation messages are of no legal merit since the false and fraudulent information will not be accepted and entered into the church's database when received by the church.

ORDINATION is a personal decision, and the ULC legalizes it as is required by the 50 states.

If you are going to perform weddings or do counseling as in pastoral counseling, we suggest you carry insurance. As an ordained minister, you stand in a different light under the law and in the courts. Advice you may give a friend, friend-to friend, is just advice. Pastoral advice is quite different. You are open to liability if your advice fails or harms the individual in some way -- as they perceive it. Also, after you officiate the marriage ceremony, you must sign your true legal name on the marriage license and mail it back to the respective state within a certain period of time. If you are late, or forget, or lose the marriage license, WOW, will there be trouble for the minister! As a recognized professional, you are expected to be aware of these things regardless of whether you did or did not know. We have offered you the best insurance to cover you for $25 per month and the service is PRE-PAID LEGAL. I have had it since 1983!

Even if you were ordained many years ago, your ordination is active for life! YES, the church keeps records as are required by law, in case we must verify your legally ordained status. The date of the ordination is not really important, but if you were ordained prior to 1980, the church requests that you go back to the website and reordain yourself in a sort of reconsecration rite! Then you will be in the current database.

I have answered the questions below in the order in which they were most requested, and the more detailed responses are near the end of the message. They are not required; the simple web site credential is all you need. Once you are ordained in the ULC, you are ordained for life... unless you, yourself, write and renounce your ordination. No one can take it from you. Ordination as a REVEREND is necessary to solemnize marriages, so if you ask for a title alone, that is not sufficient... YOU MUST BE ORDAINED!

LETTER OF GOOD STANDING

Some states do have registration requirements for ministers prior to officiating marriages in those states.
The Letter of Good Standing is the highest official documentation issued by the church. If you live in a state that requires registration of ordination documents OR you plan to officiate a marriage in a state that requires ministers to register prior to officiating marriages ---the church will provide the Letter of Good Standing. Please do not ask for a Letter of Good Standing unless it is required by law. It is a formal document that must be prepared, signed and recorded into the church's records. This takes time and staff attention. The preparation of the document is a serious issue.
To request the Letter of Good Standing you must write to the church directly at ULC, 601 Third Street, Modesto, CA 95351 and request the Letter of Good Standing for whichever state requires it. You must provide your online ordination date, name and mailing address. The service is provided FREE.

The ULC is its own DENOMINATION, which includes all denominations and individuals with no denominational beliefs, or no beliefs at all... we accept you just as you are.

All ULC information on ministers and addresses are private and Constitutionally protected by the right of association and the right of privacy, and our names are NOT available to ANYONE outside of Headquarters staff members and the Board of Directors of the church. Please do not write to me asking for names and addresses, because I cannot respond to such requests. If you contact us online and do not give an E-mail address to respond to, your questions cannot be answered.
One of the functions of E-mail is to reduce the costs of administration, staffing, and postage, and E-mail reduces those costs greatly.

We have often been reminded of our spelling and grammar in our publications. In those days we were interested in just getting out the message, but now we are improving our image and improving our message at the same time, as we are appealing to more classes of the population. ONLY the ordination records from 1980 to the present are in the current database, though all ordinations are stored in the church's backups and paper journals from the early years of the church. It is asked that you reordain yourself at the website if you want to be current, as the time it would take to find ordination in the paper journals makes it impossible to locate them, unless you know the exact date, as they are not alphabetical in those journals.

ORDINATIONS ARE FOR LIFE. MINISTERS AND CONGREGATION RECORDS ARE CONFIDENTIAL AND WE CANNOT DISCLOSE INFORMATION. I cannot respond to questions such as "tell me all the rights of a minister", because that is the function of the ULC Textbook, and typing dozens of pages is impossible. It is the responsibility of the individual to seek out the information.

The ULC no longer offers the Common Law Course.

Ordination at the website confers the website credential only and a confirmation of ministerial ordination message. It is not the credential (it is just paper) -- it is the recording of your ordination into the church records that legalizes your right to the title REVEREND. Anything else -- even those credentials available -- are only ego items. We do realize that nice credentials are important in the beginning for new ministers. Records of ordination are kept forever, and all of the "old timers" still are on record - in paper journals in the basement for reasons of age, changes of address, and deaths. With 18.3 million ministers, it is impossible to keep track of everyone, unless they contact the church directly with a change of address or send the change of address via the website contact opportunity, which is forwarded weekly to Modesto, if not sooner.

CANADIAN ULC MINISTERS WILL HAVE TO WAIT FOR THE PAPERWORK IN EACH PROVINCE TO BE APPROVED PRIOR TO OFFICIATING ANY MARRIAGES IN YOUR COUNTRY. Canadian ministers are asked to write a letter to the church to request that they be placed on a special mailing list that the church maintains to keep our ministers in Canada informed when each approval from the Provinces is received by the church. A list will also be placed on the main website to announce the Provincial recognitions received by the church.

IF YOU WERE ORDAINED BY THE PULC AT ANY TIME, that is not the ULC MODESTO, and any and all ties with that entity (PULC) were dissolved years ago. You had best become ordained at the website, and thereby confirm that your ordination is listed in the database of the MODESTO church.
